Winter Hair Blues (Rules)

WINTER is HERE !! Sometimes winter comes early in Minnesota and I think it did this year! Often the dry weather can wreak havoc on or beloved strands and follicles. To protect your sacred crown try some or all of these tips!

  1. Get a humidifier for you room where you sleep. We spend 6-10 hours a night in the same spot under dry heat, sleeping. To combat dry hair and scalp get a humidifier and fill it up with some water. Don’t forget to turn it on!
  2. When shampooing hair at home use a heavier deep conditioner like Vanilla Bean by Keratin Complex. Use a product that is especially hydrating during the dry season. Place hair in a plastic cap and wrap a towel around your head so the heat from your head can keep it warm for optimal penetration. Leave conditioner in as long as possible.
  3. Use a heat protector when blowdrying and flat iron. I  like to mix a bit of Infusion and Glotion Potion by Keratin Complex together and rub into wet hair and proceed with styling.
  4. Drink A LOT of WATER and Tea. Keeping your body hydrated will help keep your hair hydrated, I promise.
  5. Brush your hair thoroughly with a Paddle Brush every night. This stimulates hair growth, blood flow and helps distributes the hairs natural oils that come from the scalp. The Creator is an amazing engineer – He made our scalps be able to adapt to any weather if we treat it right.
  6. Massage your scalp. When you are sitting still watching TV or something- Reach up there and massage that scalp to increase blood flow and exfoliate the scalp naturally.

  8. Protect hair at night by wearing a silk or satin hair wrap or bonnet. Whether your hair is curly or straight don’t sleep with out putting something on it to protect it from the sheets. Hair tends to dry out at this time.
  9. Do not wear wool hats, if you wear a wool coat – try putting a silk or satin scarf aroud the collar to protect the hair on the back of your neck.

Myths and misconceptions:

In my VETERAN STYLIST opinion,

Braids are not a protective style. Braiding your hair up in the winter will most likely cause breakage to you edges and dryness of the scalp. Strands will not be nourished from the scalps natural oils. You hair will be dryer as well. Braids are best worn in the summer months when the air has more humidity.

Wigs suffocate the scalp! I know there a lot of women who love a good wig! If you must wear them – DO NOT sleep in them and make sure to take your hair down and brush it thoroughly after wearing the wig. The scalp needs oxygen to create blood flow for hair growth!

Weaves are not a bad option if you are willing to still wash and condition your style. Massaging the scalp underneath and cleaning the scalp is very important. Also make sure your professional stylist does not braid or sew the hair in too tight. A great idea is to put some Natural Keratin Treatment on the leave out. It will help your hair match the weave hair and keep the leave out from breaking off from heat damage.





Help! I have Dry Scalp!

Have you been experiencing dry flaky, itchy scalp lately? If you answered yes, you probably have DRY SCALP!

Dry skin and scalp (xerosis) is more prevalent in the dry winter months of the year, like now! When the weather changes, we turn on our central heaters, space heaters, fireplaces. These things dry out your skin because the humidity levels are very low at this time. 

Your skin and scalp may feel tight and you will see small dry flakes. Dry flakes are not DANDRUFF. Your hair can also look lifeless, dull, and easily break off. Dry scalp can even lead to hair loss, if this condition is left untreated.

Dandruff is also a chronic scalp condition characterized by oily-looking flakes of dead skin caused by inflammation in the body or an overgrowth of yeast like fungus. Dandruff can be caused by a number of things, sensitivity to hair products; and skin conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis or eczema.  which is why it is hard to get rid of because the condition is coming from the inside out.  Some forms of dandruff must be treated by a medical doctor.


Pre-wash treatments for scalp

  1. Brush and massage scalp often especially before shampooing to lift away dirt and dust and distribute the natural oil from your scalp. Use a paddle brush and the balls of your fingertips.
  2. Using a light oil will help loosen the flakes up before shampooing like Angel Oil(available at LCA salon) or Olive oil.

During the week

  1. Wrapping hair every night shields hair from the dry air and helps spread your natural hair oils that your body produces for your hair and scalp.
  2. Using 5-10 drops of Angel Oil or some other type of light oil every 2-3 nights will  help keep scalp lubricated.

At your appointment:

  1. Make sure to let your stylist know you are experiencing dry scalp. Ask for an Angel oil treatment and an extra Moisturizing conditioner like vanilla bean or a keratin hair mask.

With Extensions:

If you are wearing sew-in extensions, it is important to shampoo at least every 1-2 weeks because of buildup on your scalp. It is a good idea to come in the salon because a professional can give you a deeper cleaner shampoo wash. Most faucets in your home do not have enough water pressure and do not have a hose attached to them to focus the water onto the scalp. And u  need to sit under a hooded dryer to dry the wefts and your scalp. It the weave is not properly and full dried, the scalp and wefts can give off a mildew smell and will cause further additional buildup of dirt, oil and flakes.

To help with the Dry air:

-Turn on your humidifier.

-Boil a big pot of water to put moisture back in your home nightly.

-Drink lots of water!

-Add Fish oil to your Vitamin regime daily to give your skin extra lubrication.
